BALLYHEIGUE NOTES – Michael Burkett – 12th May 2015

ALZHEIMER’S COFFEE MORNING: This Wednesday 13th May, the ‘Ballyheigue Over
55s Group’ will host a Coffee morning at the FRC Sraid Thaidhg (on Cliff
Road) from 10 am to 12 noon. It is a ‘Day to Remember’ for our families and
friends. Please come along to support all people suffering from Alzheimer’s
and Dementia.

GLENDERRY NATIONAL SCHOOL: A Night at the Dogs School Fundraiser on
Saturday, May 23rd at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee. A great night
of greyhound racing to be enjoyed. First race at 7.45pm. There will be a
prize for the Best Dressed lady; Family fun with bouncy-castle, face
painting, music and lots more. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
Tickets €10 (children under 14 go free) available from the school committee
members, or directly from the school contact 066 7133827.

TOBAR NA SUL GLENDAHALON: The annual mass at the well will take place on
Friday 29th May at 8.30pm. Come and be with us at this tradition laden Holy
Place.

CONCERT IN ARDFERT CATHEDRAL: In May 2013 Ardfert Cathedral re-opened its
doors for the first High Mass in over 500 years to celebrate the Feast of
St Brendan.

Now, on June 7th this year, the Cathedral will once again throw open its
doors.

This time the Kerry Choral Union choir will perform a concert starting at
7.30pm.

Musical director Sharon Reidy has put together a night of music appropriate
to this magnificent setting. The Junior Choir will also be on hand to lend
their support.

All welcome on what will be a wonderful celebration. (In the event of bad
weather the concert will take place in St Brendan’s Church).

COMMUNITY GAMES 2015: Our Annual Sports day will be held next Sunday May
17th at 2pm in The GAA pitch. There will be races from U-8 to U-16 along
with fun races. Anyone wishing to participate must have an address in
Ballyheigue. We wish everyone the very best of luck. Admission of €2 per
child or €5 per family. Hard Luck to our U-15 futsol team who played in
Duagh last Sunday. Thanks to Mark, Jack and Fiona who travelled with the
boys.

THRESHING AGAIN: At a recent meeting of the Pattern Threshing Group, it was
decided to run the Festival again this year. To help fund the traditional
event a Table Quiz will be held in Flahive’s Bar. The Group would
appreciate parish and regional support for this.

LIFE-PACK GROUP: Ballyheigue Life pack Group is in urgent need of funding
to enable them maintain the 8 defibrillators located at various points
throughout the parish. As of now one defibrillator is not working and is
beyond repair. The cost to replace it is approx. €1,350 and we currently
don’t have the funds to do so. We have decided to hold a door to door
collection and people from your area will be calling sometime during the
month of May. We anticipate that a donation of €10 per household would be
enough to cover all costs and enable us to keep all 8 defibrillators in
perfect working order. Thank you for your support.

RETIREMENT: The people of Ballyheigue and surrounding areas wish to thank
Dr. Sean Quill for his outstanding service to the community and wish him
and his family health and happiness on his retirement. Many thanks also to
Dr Jerry Quill who has been our G.P. for Ballyheigue for a number of
years. He has taken up a new position in Cornwall, England and we wish
himself and his family every happiness.

GAA LOTTO: The following numbers were drawn at last Saturday night’s GAA
Lotto:1-17-23-26. The Jackpot of €750 was not won. Next week’s Jackpot
will be €800. The two €50 winners were Chris James, Ballylongane and Flor
Casey, Chapel Road. The €25 winner was Betty Leen, Doon, C/o Pat Joe.

GAA TABLE QUIZ: The Ballyheigue GAA Club is holding a fundraising table
quiz at the White Sands Hotel this Friday night 15th May at 9.00 pm. Table
of four €20. Your support would be very much appreciated.

UNDER 14s: The Ballyheigue U-14 hurlers were defeated by Ballyduff in the
Feile final on Monday last at Abbeydorney. It was a great achievement for
the team to reach the final as twelve members of the team are under age
again next year. Final score Ballyheigue 1-2 and Ballyduff 0-11. The
Under-14 hurlers got back on winning ways on Saturday evening when they got
the better of Kilmoyley in the Co. League. Full time score Ballyheigue 4-8
and Kilmoyley 2-7. Team: Eric Walsh, Aidan Reidy, Ciarain Casey, Jimmy
O’Halloran, Tomas Gaynor, Darran Stack, Jack Stack, Ricky Hussey (capt.),
Rory Duggan, Colin Walsh, Nathan Guerin, Brian Styles, Seamie O’Fuarain,
Conor O’Sullivan, Graham Slattery.

UNDER 11s: The U-11 hurlers had a good win over Causeway on Friday evening
in the North Kerry Championship. Ballyheigue Panel: Eoin Stack, Evan
Casey, Dara Donnelly, Dora Kearney, David O’Sullivan, Felim O’Sullivan,
Denis Lynch, Shane Lawless, Dora O’Fuarain, Muiris Harty, Simon
Corridon, Rory Cantillon, Dylan Godley, Seamus Lucey, Charlie Fitzgerald,
Gearoid Harty, Donnocha Horgan.

UNDER 14s FOOTBALL: The U-14 football team were defeated by St. Pats in the
Co. League semi-final on Wednesday evening. Score Ballyheigue 2-7 and St.
Pats 2-10.

GAA CÚL CAMP: The Kelloggs GAA Cúl Camp will take place in Ballyheigue
grounds from 13th to 17th July. Cost €55 with reduction for additional
family members. Open to all primary school children between 6 to 13 years
of age Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 2.30 pm.

CHRISTY RING CUP: Well done to the Kerry Senior hurlers who defeated Meath
in the Christy Ring Cup at Austin Stack’s Park on Saturday. Full time
score Kerry 1-23 and Meath 2-18. The Ballyheigue Club were represented on
the team by Philip Lucid. The Kerry team are now through t9 the
Christy Ring Cup semi-final.

FIXTURES: North Kerry Under-11 Championship Ballyheigue v Abbeydorney
Friday evening at John Joe O’Sullivan Park at 6.30pm. Co. Under-14 League
Ballyheigue v Kenmare/Kilgarvan Saturday evening at Kenmare 6.00pm.

CAMOGIE: Congratulations to Ballyheigue locals: Kevin O’Mahony, team
manager and Michelle O'Carroll who was the Kerry goalkeeper on the
victorious Kerry Camogie team that recently won the National Camogie League
Division 4 title, and last Sunday won the Munster Junior Camogie title
against Cork on a score line of 3-9 to 3-5.

We are running a fundraising table quiz for Kerry Camogie this Friday night
the 15th of May in McHale’s Bar, the Stretford End at 9pm. Tables of 4 x €5
per person.

COURSING LOTTO: The following numbers were drawn on Monday 4th May in the
Ballyheigue & District Coursing Club Lotto: 6-25-27-28. Jackpot was not
won. The €50 winner was: Anna Fitzgerald, C/o Tom Joe. The €25 winners
were Eileen Conway, C/o Macs. Tony Kearney, C/o Kitty and John M. Canty,
C/o Tom Joe. Next week’s Jackpot €1,400.

DEATH: The death took place during the week of Linda Lawlor, daughter of
Pat and Theresa Lawlor, of Tiershanaham, Ballyheigue, following a tragic
accident. Removal was on Friday evening from Hartnetts Funeral Home to St.
Mary’s Church. After Requiem Mass on Saturday 9th May, burial was in St.
Mary’s Cemetery, Ballyheigue. RIP. Sympathy is extended to her daughter,
parents, brother, sisters, relatives and many friends.
