BALLYHEIGUE NOTES - 18th August, 2015

COMMUNITY GAMES 2015: What a fantastic conclusion Ballyheigue Community
Games had to finish our year 2015 with such great achievements at The
National Finals in Athlone last weekend. On Sunday afternoon our very own
Shauna Casey took the floor in The Model Making Competition. Every event is
very nerve racking but Shauna was very relaxed and was absolutely thrilled
along with her parents Adrian and Mary and sister Molly when it was
announced she received 2nd place: just brilliant to receive a Silver Medal.
Padraig Woods our Swimmer had a fantastic swim to get through his heat and
onto the semi-finals. Padraig was just unlucky to miss out by 1 place to
get into the final. Well done Padraig and thanks for representing
Ballyheigue and Kerry for us. Trainer Terence Dineen and his seven-soldiers
were busy playing Draughts all weekend. On Saturday morning they had a very
early start and played again Saturday evening. This event was decided on a
points system and yet another province had to be played Sunday morning
where our boys - David O’Sullivan, Adam Dineen, Dara Kearney, Denis Lynch,
Dara Donnelly, Darragh O'Fuairain and Eric Walsh came out with 7 Bronze
Medals. The draughts was a very tough and highly contested event. The
nerves were very bad by the parents who were absolutely thrilled to receive
3rd place. We could not be more proud of all the children and thank
everyone who travelled to Athlone.

I am sure that locals will take up the challenge. We would like a
reaction.

BALLYHEIGUE NOTES - 20th October 2015

'SIVE' STAGING A GREAT SUCCESS: For historical accuracy it should be
recorded that 'Sive' was played on the stage in Doyle's Hall many, many
years ago.

Last weekend's staging by the Ballyheigue Drama Group, under the direction
of Fr. Tom Leane, drew capacity crowds from far and near to the Community
Centre.

The characterization of the personae of the play by the cast of local
actors and actresses was admired and applauded by all present in the Hall
which was transformed into a theatre for the occasion.

The old-time stage props were manufactured and assembled by the local Men's
Shed Group, contributed to the exposition of the thought processes of the
play's inner story. Great credit is due to all parish groups that
co-operated so that all parts of the production synchronized so perfectly,
resulting in a revival that was a pleasure to behold.

As the final showing of ‘SIVE’ is marked down for this Saturday night, 24th
October, it is the last opportunity you will possess to enjoy this
excellent presentation of John B's first remarkable play. Regret is an
opportunity missed!

TRIBUTE TO WILLIE: There was great sadness in our Parish last week with the
passing of a legend and well known local character Willie Leen, Chapel Road.
Willie was all his life involved with GAA. He was President of the
Ballyheigue GAA Club. He held the position of Club Treasurer for 30 years
and was the Club Delegate to the North Kerry Hurling Board for 40 years.
He attended many Co. Conventions with his great friend the late John Joe
O’Sullivan. Willie played a key role in the purchase of the Ballyheigue
GAA Sports field. A proud moment for him and his family was when he was
presented with the Hall of Fame Award from the North Kerry Hurling Board in
2012. Willie was a great man to travel and loved to visit his son Patrick
and all his friends in Chicago. He also liked to do a bit of fishing.
Nobody had a bad word to say about him and he was the life and soul of any
party or gathering. If you wanted something done – just ask Willie. The
Ballyheigue GAA Club formed a Guard of Honour at his removal and burial.
On Monday 16th November we bid a farewell to a true friend and one of the
